Some things that matter in grammar teaching, and some that don’t

With Michael Swan

The session will explore a number of questions of principle to do with grammar teaching. In particular:

  • Good and bad reasons for teaching grammar.
  • The pervasive illusion of the native-speaker target.
  • Realism and prioritisation; grammar and ELF.
  • Theoretical fashions: how 'Method' can get in the way of methods.
  • Explanations, examples and exercises: what makes them work?
  • Does grammar really have to be grey?

Michael Swan's many publications include Practical English Usage (OUP), the Cambridge English Course series (with Catherine Walter), and, also with Catherine Walter, the Oxford English Grammar Course. His interests include pedagogic grammar, cross-language influence, and the relationship between theory and practice in language teaching. He has had extensive experience with adult learners, and has worked with teachers in many countries.

Who is this for?

All EFL/ESOL teachers (newly qualified to experienced).
